Trump Signs Memorandum to Tackle Crime in Memphis

On September 15, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the formation of the “Memphis Safe Task Force” aimed at addressing crime in the city. This initiative follows a recent crackdown on crime by federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C.

Memphis had the highest violent crime rate in the U.S. for cities with populations over 250,000 in 2024, recording 2,501 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. The city also leads in property crime, with rates at 73.27 incidents per 1,000 residents. That’s quite concerning, isn’t it?

During the announcement, Trump was joined by several Tennessee officials. He highlighted the potential benefits of federal involvement, such as enhancing public safety, supporting local law enforcement, and reducing overall crime. It was, perhaps, a calculated approach to show unity in tackling these issues.

“This task force will replicate our successful efforts in D.C.,” Trump stated. He was flanked by Governor Bill Lee and Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty.

The president mentioned that the task force was created at Governor Lee’s behest. Agencies involved include the National Guard, FBI, and ICE, among others, which sounds like a full-scale effort, doesn’t it?

Governor Lee emphasized the dire need for action by saying, “When we come together, we can make a huge difference in our city.” It’s hard to argue with that sentiment.

Trump has indicated that he might also look into sending federal resources to Chicago in the near future. He said, “We’re trying to hold it down… but we need to save big cities.” This raised eyebrows, as different cities face unique challenges.

The Memphis initiative received mixed reactions. While some state leaders supported it, Memphis’s Democratic Mayor Paul Young challenged Trump’s statement that he was “happy” about the federal involvement, hinting at possible legal action. That adds a layer of tension, right?

Trump’s previous control of D.C. police, under certain provisions, had recently expired, leading to caution from local officials about a repeat scenario. He asserted, “Don’t worry about businesses in D.C., I’ll be there to support you.” That’s a bold claim.

Despite some crime rate reductions this year, Memphis still struggles significantly with public safety. The governor’s office claims that federal assistance will improve coordination among law enforcement agencies and restore safety in the area.

Overall, it looks like this task force could be a pivotal move for Memphis, but only time will tell how effective it really is.
