Trump’s new sovereign wealth fund could buy TikTok, vaccine makers

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that could allow the government to purchase Tiktok.

New Executive Actionsigned on February 3rd and led the creation of the Sovereign Wealth Fund with the goal of profiting from government contracts with certain companies.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will be appointed to the fund's efforts to acquire Tiktok and to designate shares in other large companies, possibly vaccine manufacturers.

“If you're buying 2 billion Covid vaccines, these companies should have some warrants and fairness,” Lutnick said.

Speaking alongside Trump from his oval office on Monday, Bescent said the fund was a matter of “very strategic importance.”

CNN contributor Brad Todd called the move a “bad idea” and suggested that the app should not be connected to the government.

Trump recently suspended the ban on Tiktok for 75 days after a company owned by a Chinese ordinance was ordered to sell from communist countries or sell the product to American investors.

The app went dark for around 170 million American users on January 19, before Trump implemented the delays on January 19th due to an executive order on January 20th.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) previously compared Trump to a fascist for his deal with the app. The lawmaker said Tiktok is essentially used as “a push notification system to promote Donald Trump by all 170 million American users.”
