Proposed Space Force Uniform Draws Comparisons to Sci-Fi Classic

The U.S. military often finds itself referenced or mocked in various forms of entertainment, though it’s not as common for Hollywood to be the source of inspiration for military initiatives.

Take the Space Force, for instance. Founded in December 2019, it quickly became the subject of parody, notably from Netflix with a series featuring actors like Steve Carell and John Malkovich.

Hollywood Meets Reality

Just five months after the Space Force’s inception, Netflix debuted a comedy series aptly named “Space Force.” The show presented fanciful dark-blue uniforms for its characters; however, in reality, Space Force members, known as Guardians, have been wearing modified Air Force uniforms since its establishment.

This situation is evolving, though. In 2021, the Space Force revealed a prototype of its service dress uniform, and after years of refinement, the finalized version was formally introduced earlier this year with plans for distribution laid out.

However, former President Trump seems to have different ideas.

On Sunday, he shared an image on Truth Social, showcasing a proposed “next generation” Space Force uniform.

The proposed design, described as being “inspired by the discipline and functionality of the Starship Trooper uniform,” is said to feature colors like Space Gray, Midnight Black, Silver Gray, and Satin Black.

But, the apparent influences behind the design raised eyebrows.

This possible inspiration references “Starship Troopers,” a satirical sci-fi film from 1997 directed by Paul Verhoeven, whose military aesthetic was deliberately reminiscent of fascist propaganda. Verhoeven himself mentioned that the aim of the film was to illustrate a fascist society whose citizens remained unaware of their own fascism.

Forbes was one outlet to highlight this connection, labeling the uniforms as “Sci-Fi Fascist.”

A Cult Classic

Starship Troopers has garnered a cult following, celebrated for its absurd humor, iconic quotes, and graphic action scenes, featuring swarms of giant alien bugs.

The plot unfolds in a future where Earth is governed by the Terran Federation, which grants full citizenship, including voting rights, only to those who complete a term of federal service, typically involving military enlistment.

There are additional societal privileges linked to citizenship; at one point, a character expresses a desire to enlist, believing it would help her secure a license to have children.

This depiction portrays a society that, while appearing prosperous and harmonious, is deeply militaristic. There’s a constant stream of government propaganda, calls for sacrifice, and the looming threat of alien “bugs” that unify humanity.

In a past interview, Verhoeven indicated he “wanted these people to be like proto-Nazis, proto-Aryans.”

Further discussing the film’s thematic elements, he noted that he intentionally integrated visuals from Leni Riefenstahl’s Nazi propaganda films, including “Triumph of the Will,” when creating the movie’s propaganda sequences.

“I thought Neil Patrick Harris showing up in an SS uniform would make that clear,” Verhoeven stated. “But no one understood it back then.”

Uniforms Under Development

Regardless of the intended satire, “Starship Troopers” is often remembered fondly for its tongue-in-cheek propaganda segments and memorable lines like “I’m doing my part!” and “It’s afraid!” Many fans view it as a beloved sci-fi action comedy, with its militaristic exaggeration serving as part of the humor.

Meanwhile, the Space Force continues with its long-awaited uniform rollout. An Honor Guard version, bedecked with distinctive light-blue accents, recently debuted.

It remains uncertain how Trump’s “Starship Troopers”-inspired uniform fits into the existing plans. The post indicated it was a “next generation” uniform, yet didn’t specify when it might be introduced or if it would replace the current service dress uniform being phased in.

As noted by then-Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman, “Our service dress uniform represents the unique identity of Guardians, blending heritage with a modern design that reflects our unity and mission.” He also highlighted that Guardian feedback played a vital role in shaping its design. “I know the force will wear it with pride,” he remarked.
