If Trump were the incumbent, the challenges he faces from Haley, DeSantis, Scott, and others would never have occurred. And the national Republican Party would have blocked any kind of competition.
If Mr. Trump had been allowed to run like an incumbent — unopposed or in a token race — the incumbent's claim would have had value.
