Trump's outburst towards Grassley frustrates Republican senators

Republican Senators Criticize Treatment of Grassley

Republican senators are expressing concern on social media over the rough treatment of 91-year-old Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa, the Senate’s most senior Republican. This backlash comes as Grassley pushes against the elimination of the blue slip process, a long-standing Senate procedure.

Trump’s call for Grassley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, to abandon this tradition has drawn sharp criticism. Some GOP senators are unhappy with the president’s remarks, particularly after Trump shared posts on social media labeling Grassley as “despicable” and claiming he’s obstructing Trump’s agenda.

Senator Tom Tillis from North Carolina voiced his frustration, indicating that he feels Trump is getting poor advice regarding this issue. “Chuck is well-respected in our circles,” he noted, adding that the blue slip policy actually serves to support the President by fostering cooperation.

Tillis believes that keeping the blue slip tradition is crucial for maintaining bipartisan efforts in the Senate, especially for passing legislation that requires a 60-vote threshold, such as the annual spending bill.

He mentioned that the president’s staff should have intervened before Trump targeted Grassley. “This isn’t a good idea,” he remarked, expressing his disappointment over the lack of strategic counsel.

Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska also weighed in, stating she doesn’t think targeting Grassley was necessary, calling him a dedicated team player over the years. “I think he was quite taken aback by the tone of the comments,” she said.

A Republican senator, who chose to remain anonymous, shared that Grassley’s treatment has sparked negative feedback from several colleagues. This sentiment was echoed during discussions on the Senate floor, where the backlash against Trump’s comments was prominent.

Grassley, a loyal Trump ally, has supported some of Trump’s most contentious nominees in the past. Despite this, Trump still pressured him to “step up” and make changes regarding the blue slip process. The president criticized Grassley’s lengthy tenure and suggested he should easily eliminate this convention.

“I was shocked and found it inhumane,” Grassley remarked regarding Trump’s social media posts. He expressed disappointment over the personal insults that stemmed from the situation.

This situation reflects a rare instance of GOP senators publicly addressing tensions that arise in response to presidential pressure. Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana defended the blue slip process and suggested Trump reconsider his approach towards Grassley.

“I understand the frustration, but this isn’t the right direction,” Kennedy said, highlighting the importance of community input in judicial selections.

Even Senator Tommy Tuberville, a staunch Trump supporter, criticized the idea of scrapping the blue slip process, emphasizing its historical role in judicial selections.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune backed Grassley, noting that the blue slip has been a long-standing practice that shouldn’t be hastily changed. Previous instances from GOP leaders, including Grassley himself, indicated a reluctance to alter such traditions without careful consideration.

As frustration grows over judicial nomination delays, Republican senators are discussing potential rule changes to streamline the process. Some ideas circulating include reducing the time for procedural votes or consolidating nominations into packages for more efficient voting.

“If obstruction continues at this level, we may need to explore alternative approaches to managing candidates,” Thune warned, alluding to the increasingly tense atmosphere within the Senate over judicial appointments.
