On Saturday, Margaret Brennan, CBS chief foreign affairs correspondent and host of “Face the Nation,” said that the statement from former President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump after he survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania “contains no need to de-escalate, condemns all political violence and seeks to communicate to his supporters that they should not retaliate or engage in any escalation.”
“He’s currently recovering from his injuries. This was certainly a traumatic event for him, but we didn’t hear any voices trying to ease tensions, condemn any political violence, and really tell his supporters not to retaliate or allow any escalation to occur,” Brennan said.
In statementPresident Trump thanked the Secret Service and police, offered his condolences to the families of those killed and seriously injured in the shooting, said he was the one who was shot, and said he was shocked that something like this could happen.
