During Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” former MSNBC host Chris Matthews said former 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s criticism of President Joe Biden during Thursday’s presidential debate for not firing anyone after the Afghanistan withdrawal was “really smart” and that Biden’s unwillingness to fire people is “troubling” because a willingness to fire people could help build credibility, like President Ronald Reagan firing air traffic controllers. Matthews added, “I don’t get it. Why weren’t the generals fired after the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan? Nothing.”
After former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) criticized Biden for claiming that no U.S. soldiers have died under his administration and pointing to the deaths of U.S. soldiers killed in Kabul, Matthews said, “And he also said, I never…Trump had a really clever line. He said you should never fire anybody. And that’s the problem. If you don’t fire anybody, [in] “Just as President Reagan eliminated the planes, he also eliminated the senior position of air traffic controller, sending a message to the Soviets. The Soviets then took Reagan seriously. I don’t understand why they didn’t. Why weren’t the generals fired after that disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan? There was nothing.”
