President Donald Trump was a notable presence during Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup trophy celebration at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Star midfielder Cole Palmer expressed some confusion about Trump’s involvement. “I was aware he was there, but when I lifted the trophy, seeing him in the stands threw me off a bit,” Palmer shared.
Trump remained on stage as Chelsea celebrated their 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain. Video footage captured Palmer standing beside Trump during this moment. A lip reader even speculated on Palmer’s thoughts, questioning why the President was present.
During the event, Trump, along with his wife Melania and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, awarded Palmer the golden ball for being one of the tournament’s standout players. Palmer scored three goals over the competition, including two in the final match.
Reflecting on the win, Palmer said, “Scoring was amazing, but I think our team’s energy and the Gaffer’s strategy really made a difference.” It’s important to note that Chelsea hadn’t faced off against Paris Saint-Germain in a competitive match since 2016.
The atmosphere was electric, with a crowd of 81,118 fans mostly cheering for Chelsea at MetLife Stadium. Chelsea’s coach, Enzo Maresca, commented, “We showed we were ready to compete. You can outline every detail for the players, but they have to execute it on the field.”
Looking ahead, MetLife Stadium will also be one of the venues for next summer’s World Cup in North America.
