Jack Lew Discusses Trump’s Role in Middle East Engagement
During a recent segment on CNN’s “Outfront,” Jack Lew, former U.S. ambassador to Israel under President Biden, remarked on Donald Trump’s influence in the Middle East. He suggested that Trump “created a field of force” that pushed key leaders, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, to act. Lew noted that Trump’s distinct manner—one that can provoke urgency while simultaneously deflecting anger—serves a purpose, particularly in reaching significant milestones.
Lew emphasized that the current meetings in Sharm el-Sheikh mark the start of a challenging journey that necessitates ongoing U.S. commitment. He stressed that sustaining an agreement beyond the initial phases requires persistent involvement from both the president and the United States.
Responding to host Erica Hill’s inquiry about Trump’s pivotal role, Lew expressed agreement, stating that Trump’s continued involvement is crucial. While he acknowledged that the details are essential and progress has been made on various provisions, he maintained that a president uniquely facilitates an environment in which other leaders feel compelled to act. “He did that with many leaders in the region. His approach, albeit destructive at times, has been effective in creating urgency and avoiding friction over disagreements. Ultimately, that has helped us arrive at this historic point,” Lew concluded.
