Trump's Strategy to Tackle Crime in Our City is 'Disturbing'

Mayor Bowser Responds to Trump’s Views on Washington, D.C.

Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C. has suggested that President Donald Trump’s perspective on the capital is influenced by his experiences during the COVID era of his first term. She claims that crime has been effectively addressed in the city and that Trump’s narrative obscures the truth of their efforts.

Bowser recently held a press conference to highlight the positives of D.C., describing it as “beautiful.” She emphasized, “Washington, D.C. is a spectacular city. We have a population of 700,000 residents and welcome millions of visitors yearly from across the country and around the world. Our public schools are impressive, including one of the best free Pre-K programs starting at age three.”

She went on to underline the pride Washingtonians feel for their city and its accomplishments, saying, “For all of us who live here, it’s essential to recognize our city’s beauty and our collective achievements.”

On another note, she pointed out that, while D.C. residents pay more per capita in state taxes, they lack full autonomy, including control over the National Guard or representation in the Senate. “I reiterate that I believe the President’s views of D.C. are shaped by his experiences during his challenging COVID days. It’s important to portray an accurate picture, distinct from the narrative being painted,” she remarked.

Bowser also claimed that their efforts have successfully reversed the crime spike witnessed earlier in 2023, insisting they are committed to finding more ways to enhance city safety. “However, as we heard from the President, he holds a unique privilege regarding D.C., having authority under our home rule charter.”

She clarified the responsibilities outlined in that charter, noting that the Metropolitan Police Department, led by Chief Pamela Smith, consists of 3,100 members tasked with ensuring safety during emergencies. Bowser emphasized, “Our access to democracy is fragile.”

She expressed that she and many in Washington advocate for statehood, highlighting that residents are American citizens who serve in the military, pay taxes, and engage in civic duties. Turning her attention back to Trump, she characterized his actions as “unstable and unprecedented,” while noting that, given past rhetoric, they were not entirely surprised.

Trump recently indicated plans to invoke Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to place the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal control. He also announced intentions to activate the National Guard to address crime in the capital. “Our capital has been taken over by violent gangs and criminals, and that’s not going to continue,” he stated in a press conference.
