CNN host Jake Tapper said Monday on his show “The Read” that former President Donald Trump’s claim of immunity is “crazy” because it means he can “do anything.”
Tapper read an op-ed in the New York Times by former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), in which she warned, “If we delay the trial of this Trump case, the people will decide…” Developed before the grand jury, our system will never be able to hold accountable those most responsible on January 6th.” Now, she suggests there is significant evidence against Trump. Grand jury testimony from former chief of staff Mark Meadows and former White House aide Dan Scavino said the committee didn’t hear what it needed to hear on Jan. 6. What do you think? “
“I think the Supreme Court takes these constitutional issues very seriously,” said legal analyst Tom Dupree. “I don’t think they’re going to go where former President Trump wants them to go. Trump. I don’t think they would agree with the broad presidential privilege that the president is claiming.”
Tapper said, “That’s crazy, that’s crazy.” He’s basically claiming he can do anything. ”
Dupree agreed, saying, “That’s true. But I think the interesting question, at least to me, is Sen. Cheney’s point: Is the Supreme Court going to simply say, ‘There’s no immunity here?’ ” he said. Let’s proceed with the trial.” Or are they going to say that there may be some immunity here, but the contours need to be drawn up and the district court decides? If the Supreme Court does so in this case, district courts would have to weigh whether these claims fall within the ambit of immunity, which could further delay the election. ”
