Trump’s tariffs have had no effect on prices or consumer demand.

Amazon CEO Comments on Impact of Tariffs

During a recent shareholders meeting, Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, shared insights about the company’s experience with consumer spending and pricing amid Donald Trump’s tariff policies. He noted that, surprisingly, Amazon hasn’t seen significant shifts in average selling prices or consumer behavior, countering dire predictions from some retailers.

In this Q&A session, Jassy addressed the concerns regarding how the tariffs on Chinese imports might influence the e-commerce sector. While companies like Walmart and Target have warned of potential price hikes, Jassy stated that Amazon hasn’t faced noticeable increases in its average selling prices. Moreover, consumer demand appears stable at this point.

“We have not seen a decline in demand at this point,” he reported to shareholders. “We have not yet seen any significant average selling prices rise yet.”

He did mention that some sellers, particularly those from China, have raised their prices due to the tariffs. However, many others have kept their prices steady, balancing out the overall average price. This indicates that, despite isolated changes, consumer spending remains consistent.

Jassy’s remarks lend further credence to observations by economic analysts suggesting that fears of inflation due to tariffs may be overstated. One commentator previously noted that if the alarmists were right, we would see clear indicators by now.

Despite the pressures from ongoing trade disputes with China, including proposed significant tariff increases, it seems Amazon has adeptly managed its operations without severe disruptions. Major retailers have indicated they might soon raise prices, yet Jassy’s insights suggest Amazon is navigating these challenges well, maintaining its competitive edge in the marketplace.

Amidst these tensions, a recent controversy arose related to Amazon’s plans to charge import fees on certain products, which was criticized by officials as being politically motivated. This situation has prompted direct communication between President Trump and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Overall, Jassy’s report reflects Amazon’s resilience in the face of complex trade dynamics, maintaining stability in both pricing and consumer interest, even as the broader economic landscape continues to evolve.
