President Trump and his supporters are probing into former President Biden’s health following his prostate cancer diagnosis.
Biden’s diagnosis paints a concerning picture of aging, especially as he prepares to release his new book, which is set for Tuesday.
Trump frequently criticizes Biden, often implying he doesn’t understand what Biden has been doing. However, he quickly added that he hopes for a “successful recovery” for his predecessor.
On Monday, Vice President Vance addressed both Biden’s health and the potential for legislative progress, implying that balance is necessary in governance.
“We can hope for his health,” Vance told reporters, “but if you can’t do your job effectively, then you really shouldn’t be doing it.”
Biden’s office announced on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer, discovered after a routine medical examination revealed a small nodule earlier in the month. The spokesperson indicated that this finding “needs further evaluation.”
Concerns about Biden’s suitability for office, especially with Trump potentially moving into a second term, have been raised frequently. Critics highlight issues with his cognitive abilities as he approaches 82 years old.
Trump has voiced strong discontent with Biden, attributing various challenges—from economic failures to foreign policy missteps—to his predecessor and even labeling him “cognitively disabled.”
Recently, spokesperson Caroline Leavitt remarked on Biden’s mental state, describing him as “psychologically incompetent” and pointing to a drop in trust related to how mainstream media covers Biden’s cognitive faculties.
When questioned about Biden’s doctor, Kevin O’Connor, and the implications of recent revelations from Biden’s new book, Leavitt suggested waiting for Trump to address further actions on this matter.
Reports, including insights from CNN and Axios, reveal discussions around Biden’s health and whether he would be fit for another term, raising alarms about a possible future where he might struggle significantly.
Audio from an interview just before Biden’s cancer announcement showed him visibly struggling to respond to questions, leading to speculation about his mental acuity. This was further complicated by the discovery of classified documents at his private residence, which did not lead to legal action.
Biden has maintained that he is capable of serving in his role, with aides defending his cognitive abilities. Nonetheless, he ultimately decided to withdraw from the 2024 race after facing heavy criticism during a debate against Trump.
Amid criticism, Vance suggested a candid discussion is needed about Biden’s health and whether he can truly manage another term, hoping for the best but acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.
“Whether it’s the doctor or those around the former president, there needs to be clarity about his health. I have doubts he can serve effectively,” Vance stated.
“In some ways, I think the blame also lies with the people surrounding him,” he continued. “Why hasn’t there been more transparency about what he’s truly facing? This is serious stuff.”
A former communications aide to the Trump administration agreed that shifting focus solely onto Biden isn’t productive, suggesting that it’s possible to acknowledge his health while being straightforward about his ability to serve.
Despite the gravity of Biden’s health situation, some Republican voices urge the Trump camp to temper their attacks while he deals with cancer.
One social media user expressed, “I don’t want to hear any more about covering up Biden’s health; what the family is facing right now is really tough.”
Sources close to Trump have indicated that his criticisms regarding Biden’s health were becoming outdated prior to the cancer diagnosis.
Still, some Republicans see Biden’s medical situation as an opportunity to call into question his capability, even referencing actions he took during his presidency.
On Monday, Donald Trump Jr. took to social media to demand accountability, asking “Who really ran the country?”
In the meantime, political strategist David Axelrod, who previously advised Obama, continues to advocate for a conversation around Biden’s mental acuity and the potential need for resignation sooner rather than later.
“These discussions will indeed take place, but perhaps Biden should focus more on his recovery right now,” Axelrod told CNN.
