Trump's UN ambassador confronts Cuban foreign minister in America

Confrontation at U.N. General Assembly

During a recent session at the U.N. General Assembly, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz had a heated exchange with Cuba’s foreign minister. The Cuban diplomat interrupted his speech, prompting Waltz to firmly tell him to “back up.” He accused the Cuban government of growing wealthy while its citizens continue to suffer.

“We know where that money goes,” Waltz declared, emphasizing his point as he faced interruptions from the Cuban delegation. “This is America, my friend. This is the United Nations. You cannot silence me,” he asserted, making it clear this was not a place for intimidation.

As the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, tried to approach the podium, the president of the General Assembly attempted to maintain order, reminding everyone that Cuba would still have its chance to respond.

Waltz continued, saying, “This individual needs to back away from this podium. He’s not going to intimidate me in the United States of America.” His remarks echoed a strong sentiment of defense, emphasizing, “Back up! This isn’t Havana.”

The entire incident took place during the General Assembly’s annual discussions on the longstanding U.S. embargo against Cuba, with Waltz urging other nations to reject a proposal aimed at lifting those restrictions. He placed blame squarely on Cuba’s communist government for its societal problems, attributing the hardships to rampant corruption and repression.

After Cuba was given the opportunity to address the Assembly, its foreign minister accused Waltz of dishonesty. He requested that the General Assembly president intervene, labeling Waltz’s comments as beneath the dignity expected in such a forum. “Mr. Waltz is lying yet again,” he asserted, defending the integrity of Cuba’s governance and citizens.

In a follow-up post on social media, Waltz seemingly doubled down, suggesting that Cuban leaders were trying to hide their luxurious lifestyles, adding that he was ready to present evidence, which evidently made the Cuban delegation uncomfortable.
