Trump’s undeniable battleground advantage over Biden continues

In last Tuesday’s Georgia primary, Trump once again outperformed Biden in key battleground states.Unlike michigan, Trump still faced a nomination contest, but this time the candidates were on equal and non-opposing positions. And Trump’s lack of an opponent did not undermine his substantial advantage over Biden in the polls.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult not to think that the large vote margins in the primaries will be significant for November.

in georgia, both Biden and Trump secured enough delegates to nominate their respective parties. That’s where the similarities end. Mr. Biden received approximately 275,000 votes and Mr. Trump received 497,000 votes. Overall, the Democratic candidate received approximately 289,000 votes and the Republican candidate received 587,000 votes.

Georgia’s key accomplishments in 2024 are: 2020. Mr. Trump then narrowly won the primary vote, 947,352 to 922,177, giving the Democrat an overall lead of about 140,000 votes. Then, despite Biden’s easy victory, the Democratic field remained crowded, while incumbent Trump had the Republican field to himself.

The lack of a challenger explains the significant drop in 2024 primary votes for both parties. Trump’s total vote total fell by 451,000 votes, while Biden’s total fell by 647,000 votes. Overall, there were 361,000 fewer Republican votes in 2024 and 798,000 fewer Democratic votes.

The reason for the focus on Georgia is that it was one of the six battleground states (Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin) that determined Biden’s electors in 2016. 2020. Although Biden won the overall popular vote 51.3% to 46.9%, his electoral vote was just 306 to 232, determined by narrow results in each state. Georgia accounted for 16 of those electors, giving Biden fewer than 12,000 votes.

Georgia is the second of these six battleground states to hold an insightful primary on votes cast.Nevada voted in February, but President Trump It was not on the preliminary ballot. Nikki Haley came in second place behind “”.None of these candidates

The first significant primary election was in Michigan, which Mr. Trump won. Mostly won 136,000 more votes than Biden. This reversed Biden’s 200,000 vote advantage. 2020 primaries. Overall, Democrats received about 900,000 more votes than Republicans in the 2020 primary. In 2024, Republicans won nearly 350,000 votes over Democrats in Michigan’s primary.

In November 2020, Biden defeated Trump by just over 150,000 votes, securing Michigan’s 16 electoral votes.

Democrats argue that Michigan’s dramatic flip in the 2024 primary was because Trump was still in the contested primary, meaning that Nikki Haley’s challenge was overshadowed by her supporters (Republicans). Trump’s supporters (who increased his vote share and that of the Republican Party as a whole). It went virtually unchallenged (except by the protest’s “non-commitment” vote campaign).

But with Georgia’s results, the Democratic Party’s Michigan claim appears to have passed the grave. In Georgia, Haley was still on the ballot but no longer in the race, leaving Trump and Biden uncontested.

Haley received more primary votes against Trump than Biden did over Trump, but Trump still received more than 220,000 more votes than Biden in the 2020 primary. Even without including other Republican primary votes, Trump still won more votes than Biden. They easily defeated all Democratic candidates combined.

What does this twice-appearing contradiction tell us? Does it indicate November’s results? You can see that there is a big difference between the total number of votes cast in the primary election and the total number of votes cast in the general election. Does that indicate voting activity in both parties? It’s hard to imagine either party putting much effort into these essentially meaningless contests. Perhaps this is an indication of voter motivation, but even this is not conclusive.

What is indisputable is that the large differences in primary outcomes are unique. Polls in both Michigan and Georgia show Trump with a significant lead. One week after the Georgia primary, RealClearPolitics average vote In both states, Trump leads by 3.5 percentage points in Michigan and by 5.7 percentage points in Georgia.

How important these primary votes and polls in Georgia and Michigan are is up for debate, and I’m sure Democrats will debate it. There’s no debating how important Georgia and Michigan are in November. In sum, these are equal Number of electoral votes: 31 (Michigan lost the seat due to reapportionment). If Trump were to win every state he won in 2020, he would only need to flip 35 electoral votes to win the presidency (three seats went to Trump states through reapportionment).

There’s clearly something going on in these primaries. It’s hard to argue that the number of votes doesn’t matter in elections. Now Trump has it. Biden isn’t like that. He also has them in the states that will determine the 2024 outcome. What we see in the primary vote totals is also confirmed in the polls.

However, what voters say in polls can be predictive. What they do with their votes is decisive. With less than eight months until the election, Trump is starting to appear in the most important places. Mr. Biden is not like that.
