Trump Administration’s Crime Sweep in D.C. Nets Over 240 Arrests
The Trump administration’s efforts to tackle violent crime in Washington, D.C. have resulted in more than 240 arrests and the confiscation of 38 firearms, according to White House officials.
This operation, described as a show of strength, targeted gang members, robbery suspects, and undocumented immigrants. Just this past Friday, authorities arrested 52 individuals, including 28 who were reportedly in the country illegally. Additionally, three firearms were seized during these actions.
The initiative also involved the clearing of 25 homeless encampments, which officials stated was accomplished without incidents of conflict or arrests.
Stephen Miller, serving as policy secretary for the White House Deputy Chiefs of Staff, praised the scale of the operation, calling the numbers “breathtaking.” He mentioned various threats to public safety, including illegal weapons used by violent offenders, gang members, and others who have historically terrorized the local population.
On August 7, the operation began quietly with the formation of the “Safe and Beautiful DC” task force, established through an executive order by President Trump in March. This initiative escalated on August 11 when the President temporarily took federal control of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), marking a historic first under the Home Rules Act.
The order places the MPD under federal oversight for a period of up to 30 days, deploying 800 National Guard troops unless extended by Congress. In total, over 1,800 personnel from various federal and local agencies are working across all seven police districts in D.C. As Trump stated, “We have a very unsafe capital… something is out of control, but we’re going to control it very quickly.”
Other arrests made during this period included violations related to drug distribution, weapon charges, and outstanding warrants. Meanwhile, the National Guard conducted patrols around the National Mall and Union Station, assuring the public that their presence was not intended for arrest but to secure federal assets and assist local law enforcement.
The push for federalizing D.C. law enforcement gained momentum after a former employee was brutally attacked during an attempted carjacking. This incident prompted the swift action and heightened policing efforts.
While local Democrats have pointed out that recent reports show violent crime dropped by 35% from 2023 to 2024, the FBI statistics paint a different picture, showing only a 9% decrease. These discrepancies reflect differences in how crime is reported across various agencies.
Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has criticized the federal approach as “unstable and unprecedented.” In response to the ongoing situation, Democrats have introduced a joint resolution aiming to stall the federal takeover of policing.
