A routine screening of carry-on luggage at a Texas airport took a surprising twist when TSA officers made a curious find and then received an unexpected explanation from the travelers involved.
At Dallas Love Field Airport, TSA officers uncovered a pocketknife hidden inside a tube of toothpaste. This revelation was shared in an employee account on the agency’s website.
TSA Officer Jazmine Kramer was using an X-ray machine to inspect a carry-on bag when she spotted what looked like a metal object among the toiletries and decided to flag it for further investigation.
“Typically, when people accidentally carry prohibited items in their bags, it’s not because they think they can sneak it through security,” Kramer mentioned in the agency’s report.
Wade Brown, Jr., a security training instructor, searched through the toiletry bag but initially couldn’t locate the object visible on the X-ray. He decided to put the belongings back through the X-ray machine to pinpoint its position.
Upon examining the toothpaste tube more closely, he noticed it felt unusual and saw tape on one end.
After a detailed inspection, they found the pocketknife cleverly hidden inside.
The couple whose bag it was explained to officers that their son had suggested hiding the knife in the toothpaste tube in hopes of getting it past security, a rather unexpected tactic, as noted by the TSA.
Brown expressed his surprise, saying, “I was really taken aback when they shared that. This is the first time at DAL I’ve encountered someone intentionally trying to conceal an item in something else to bypass security.” The couple turned over the pocketknife voluntarily.
They were allowed to proceed with their flight after the incident, as confirmed by TSA.
Brown pointed out the significance of communication among officers when something seen on an X-ray isn’t easily found during a manual search. He emphasized the need to collaborate and communicate until the item is found.
According to TSA Dallas Love Field’s Federal Security Director Amy Williams, officers must always be ready for unexpected finds during screenings. “Finding a knife hidden within a tube of toothpaste isn’t something travelers usually anticipate, but it’s just the type of threat our officers are trained to identify and handle,” Williams stated.
In another recent incident at Tampa International Airport, TSA officers discovered a 4-inch double-edged knife concealed inside a baseball bat-shaped flashlight that was tucked beneath the lining of a passenger’s carry-on bag. Initially, the passenger claimed he was unaware of the knife in his luggage but later admitted he had placed it there to save space. He was subsequently arrested and was not permitted to travel, according to TSA.
