Tuberville backs sending US troops into Nigeria to protect Christians

Tuberville Supports Potential Troop Deployment to Nigeria

Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) expressed his support on Wednesday for President Trump should he decide to deploy U.S. troops to Nigeria to safeguard Christians facing threats from Islamic extremists.

During the weekend, President Trump mentioned the possibility of mobilizing the military in response to the killings of Christians by Islamist groups. He criticized Nigerian leadership for their inaction on the matter and labeled Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) due to escalating religious violence.

Trump asserted on Truth Social, “If the Nigerian government continues to condone the murder of Christians, we might cut off all aid to Nigeria and enter into this now disgraced country to eliminate the Islamic terrorists responsible for these horrific acts.” He instructed the War Department to prepare for potential action.

In a conversation with Fox News reporter John Roberts, Tuberville confirmed his support for using U.S. troops in Nigeria, stating, “I certainly would.”

Experts point out that while Nigeria’s majority Muslim community also experiences violence, the Christian population has been disproportionately affected.

The Observatory for Religious Freedom in Africa (ORFA), a charity based in the Netherlands, has reported on violence against civilians in Nigeria from 2019 to 2024. Their findings, released in July, highlighted that amid 36,056 civilian deaths during this timeframe, 2.4 Christians were killed for every Muslim.

Tuberville, however, suggested the figures might be higher, declaring, “62,000 Christians were murdered in Nigeria, with 100,000 people killed across Africa and 18,000 churches burned. There’s substantial evidence, and that’s likely an underestimate.” He emphasized the urgent need to protect those who cannot defend themselves.

He went on, “It’s just insane. If we get involved, President Trump could resolve this quickly. This isn’t like engaging with Russia, China, or Iran. It’s about helping innocent people reclaim their nation. It’s tragic this is happening, but we cannot ignore it. We can’t underestimate the situation.”

On the other hand, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu refuted Trump’s classification of Nigeria, asserting that religious freedom and tolerance are essential to the nation’s identity. In a social media statement, he said, “Nigeria opposes and does not support religious persecution, as our constitution guarantees protections for citizens of all faiths.”
