Media and Democratic Party Suggest Political Motives Behind Tulsi Gabbard’s Resignation Amid Husband’s Cancer Battle
Following the diagnosis of rare bone cancer in her husband, Abraham, Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation as the Director of National Intelligence. Media commentators, including those from FOX News, are accusing figures in the Democratic Party, such as Nira Tanden and Adam Schiff, of politicizing her departure. They argue that such criticisms, especially during a personal health crisis, are quite inappropriate.
In a heartfelt post on X, Gabbard shared that Abraham is recovering at home after a nearly seven-hour surgery for a condition she described as a “very rare sacral chordoma.” She detailed the surgery was successful but acknowledged that he had a rough night and is in significant pain, though he is now beginning to recover.
Last month, FOX News Digital first reported her impending resignation to support her husband in his battle against this “extremely rare form of bone cancer.”
Concerns Over Responses to Gabbard’s Decision
The reactions to her resignation have been described as “disgusting” by some Democrats and media members, pointing to a perceived lack of compassion in the criticism of Gabbard’s choice.
During a meeting in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump in mid-May, Gabbard communicated her decision. Her last day was set for June 30th.
Thanking everyone for their kind words and support in her post, Gabbard expressed her gratitude for the care her family has received: “Our hearts are full.”
In the wake of her resignation, President Trump appointed Bill Pruitt, the Federal Housing Finance Agency Secretary, to serve as acting DNI.
Pruitt will also continue his roles with entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac during this transitional period. Gabbard, a U.S. Army Reserve officer and veteran, previously held multiple terms as a Democrat before shifting to an independent stance and eventually joining the Republican Party.
In her formal resignation letter, Gabbard expressed heartfelt gratitude for the trust placed in her during her tenure leading the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. She noted that her decision was influenced by the challenges her husband is set to face in the coming weeks and months.
Stressing the importance of being present for him, she mentioned that she cannot, in good conscience, ask him to face this difficult journey without her support. “Abraham has been my rock throughout our 11 years of marriage, and I need to be there for him now,” she stated.
In response to her resignation, President Trump noted on Truth Social that it was only natural for her to want to support her husband during such a trying time and praised her performance in the DNI role. He expressed confidence that Abraham would recover and that Gabbard would be missed.
Sacral chordoma is characterized as a rare, slow-growing tumor that arises within the sacrum—the triangular bone at the base of the spine. The National Cancer Institute categorizes chordoma under a rare type of bone cancer affecting various areas around the spine and skull.
