Suspect Arrested for Fatal Purse Theft Incident

A 23-year-old man has been apprehended in Glendale following a tragic incident where an elderly woman was fatally struck during a purse snatching. The altercation unfolded around 2:45 p.m. on a Saturday, as prosecutors revealed the details in court.

Ali Khaimi, the suspect, has a history of targeting older individuals, according to prosecutors. Eyewitness accounts indicate he approached the couple near their home on 59th Street, engaged the woman in conversation, and then forcefully grabbed her purse. In a desperate struggle, the woman was hit by Khaimi’s car.

“He knocked her over completely—there were tire marks on her head,” a prosecutor stated, emphasizing the severity of the incident, which took place right in front of her husband.

After being rushed to a hospital, the woman succumbed to her injuries. Just days prior, Khaimi had allegedly robbed another elderly woman, following her home from the bank and snatching $5,000 that she had just withdrawn. The stolen items, including her wallet and medication, were later discovered abandoned.

“He had a clear pattern of preying on elderly victims who couldn’t defend themselves,” the prosecutor added, illustrating Khaimi’s method of operation.

In a peculiar twist, when Khaimi appeared in Maricopa County Superior Court, he initially spoke in English but then requested an Arabic interpreter. Through the interpreter, he expressed concerns regarding his mental health, suggesting confinement would exacerbate his condition. “I think maybe it would be best if I could stay at home, like my mother’s house, if that’s possible,” he articulated.

The judge denied his request for home detention and set his bail at $1.25 million, along with other conditions for potential release.

Khaimi now faces serious charges, including first-degree murder and multiple counts of robbery. Despite his ties to Arizona, there are speculations about his immigration status due to his request for an interpreter.

Neighbors have noted that the couple had just returned to retrieve belongings from Florida, and the aftermath of the crime was severe enough that workers had to clean blood from the streets following the attack.
