Bad Bunny to Headline Super Bowl Halftime Show
Late last month, it was revealed that Benito Ocasio, more popularly known as Bad Bunny, will headline the halftime show for the Super Bowl on February 8 in Santa Clara, California. Ocasio is a well-known Puerto Rican rapper who often challenges traditional gender norms.
Interestingly, he recently shared his thoughts on Kamala Harris’ unsuccessful presidential campaign. On “Saturday Night Live,” he mentioned that “people all over the world who love my music are happy” about his performance. Yet, a substantial number of Americans seem to be unhappy with the NFL’s choice of artist.
Ocasio’s decision to skip a U.S. tour was noted by many, linking it perhaps to a protest against the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies. He has also expressed strong criticism towards U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and raised eyebrows for his fashion choices, like appearing in drag with fake breasts.
Some critics have pointed out the expectation to learn Spanish to fully appreciate his Super Bowl performance, stirring a bit of debate about cultural representation.
In response to the controversy, a group called Turning Point USA has announced plans for an alternative halftime show. They aim to showcase themes of faith, family, and freedom, although specific details and performers have yet to be disclosed. The name of their event—”All-American Halftime Show”—suggests a clear contrast to Bad Bunny’s performance.
The Turning Point USA website even invites feedback on the types of music guests would like to see featured—options include Americana, classic rock, and country, among others.
This development has been met with enthusiasm among many conservative commentators. Blaze TV host Aaron McIntyre expressed that “it’s time” for this alternative approach. Another commentator highlighted the cultural shift, noting that a parallel culture in America is emerging, one that seeks to reclaim traditional values.
Interestingly, Donald Trump weighed in, describing it as “absolutely ridiculous” for Ocasio to headline the official halftime show.
