A man enters the police station. “I’d like to report a murder.” “Who was murdered?” “Yes.” And so begins director Rudolf Maté’s relentless thriller. Edmund O’Brien plays small-town accountant Frank, who is secretly injected with a fast-acting, incurable poison while on vacation in San Francisco, and races against time to uncover the identity of the murderer. O’Brien is a convincing ladies’ man who becomes a Philip Marlowe-esque detective on increasingly sweaty, frantic hunts that range from jazz bars to swanky apartments to warehouse shootouts. Phil Spector, 4.30am, Sky Cinema Greats

The 2013 drama, directed by David Mamet, opens with a sizable disclaimer of fact, depicting music producer Phil Spector’s 2007 murder trial of Lana Clarkson, with no real guilt or innocence. It focuses more on the pros and cons of fame. Al Pacino, playing the strangely dismayed Spector, enjoys Mamet’s series of conversations with Helen Mirren’s more thoughtful lawyer and confidante, Linda Kenny Burden. south wales
