Reflection of stars…Roy Scheider. Photo: Maximum Film/Alamy

Cathartic, self-flagellating, and gloriously indulgent, Bob Dian's semi-autobiographical 1979 musical sees the director and choreographer perform nearly unparalleled dance routines while also depicting womanizing, prescription drug abuse, and chains. It gave me an opportunity to highlight his many flaws, such as smoking. Roy Scheider is Joe Gideon, Diane's incarnation, attending new Broadway shows and editing films even as he appears to be on the brink of death. Flashy dream sequences and flashbacks offer a glimpse into an impulsive but devoted, contradictory character who lived for his art. Simon Wardell
