Hasan Piker Endorses Far-Left Candidates for NYC Council
Controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has shown support for two far-left candidates vying for seats on the New York City Council, suggesting that their success could help advance socialist principles in the country. Speaking at a rally in Brooklyn, Piker noted that while socialism might seem distant, there’s more opportunity now than ever to move toward it.
Piker endorsed state Representative Claire Valdez and activist Dalializa Avila Chevalier, the latter of whom he described as a significant figure within the socialist movement. He emphasized the importance of taking advantage of current opportunities, urging the crowd to remain organized and disciplined in their efforts. “That’s the challenge,” he remarked.
Both candidates are aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and share ambitious goals, such as abolishing ICE, increasing taxes on the wealthy, and advocating for the Palestinian cause in Congress. If they succeed in the upcoming primary, they are likely to increase the representation of far-left ideals within the Democratic caucus.
Piker remarked on the rare occasion of encountering such ideological strength at crucial political levels, reinforcing the notion that a congressional seat carries significant influence. Valdez humorously referenced her admiration for Avila Chevalier while on stage with her, describing it as a remarkable honor to stand alongside fellow socialist advocates.
Valdez is currently contending for the seat left open by retiring Representative Nydia Velasquez, which encompasses strong progressive areas of Queens and Brooklyn. Meanwhile, Avila Chevalier faces a tough challenge against state Representative Adriano Espaillat, who leads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in a district comprising parts of Upper Manhattan and the West Bronx.
The duo enjoys backing from various progressive entities, including Mayor Zoran Mamdani and the Justice Democrats, a group recognized for its role in elevating Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s political career.
However, Avila Chevalier has sparked controversy due to her past social media remarks—some of which have since been deleted—where she allegedly expressed extreme views regarding immigration and Israel. Additionally, Mamdani and his allies have faced scrutiny for their past statements about prominent political figures.
Piker expressed confidence that the emerging socialist victories in New York City will soon eclipse the attention surrounding Mamdani’s recent mayoral win. He predicted, somewhat dramatically, that by the next midterm elections, Mamdani would become almost an afterthought in the wake of an influx of progressive candidates.
As Piker continues to campaign alongside these candidates, he has faced backlash for some comments he’s made in the past that many found controversial. His ongoing engagement with socialist candidates across the country seems to mark a significant moment in the political landscape.
Some allies of Piker experienced defeats in recent primaries, yet he noted a positive outcome in New Jersey with the election of progressive surgeon Adam Hamaoui to a Democratic House seat.
Spokespeople for Valdez and Avila Chevalier have yet to respond to requests for comments on this developing political scene.
