According to Franklin County city records, 20-year-old CeCe Plak and 21-year-old Zachary Boyd confronted the boy they found in Plak's car at a Columbus apartment early Thursday morning. The boy told Columbus police that police assaulted him and kidnapped him at gunpoint.
Around 5:30 a.m., the boy's father received a call from a woman demanding $3,000 to repair damage to the car, including the ignition switch. They said the boy would not be released until the money was received via Cash App.
A SWAT team was called in to rescue the child and arrested the two. The boy was found unharmed and the couple were charged with felony first-degree kidnapping.
WBNS-TV reported that there was another vehicle in the same parking lot with a broken window and an ignition “ripped out.”
Franklin County Municipal Court Judge Andrea Peoples warned of vigilante justice during Friday's bail hearing.
“I understand the minimal record, but if the facts are to be believed, we are definitely in the Wild West here where people are taking justice into their own hands,” she said. .
Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein agreed.
“Don't take justice into your own hands. But I think this is evidence and a reflection of the grievances that people have. They can maintain a living and pay their bills. “We want it to be that way, and they know it,” he said. This may not happen if the car is stolen. ”
A third boy in the apartment was also charged with kidnapping.
The couple are each being held on $500,000 bail.
