An AFP photographer at the scene said the attacker was killed and his body was still at the scene.

Police said the man was “neutralized” by civilians at the scene.

“We have activated a national alert,” Israeli police chief Kobi Shabtai told reporters at the scene, but did not provide details about the attacker.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in the aftermath of the attack that the fight against Hamas terrorism continues.

We send our deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the Leme Junction terrorist attack and pray for the souls of those injured. This attack is a reminder that the entire country is on the front line, and killers from Gaza alone are trying to kill us all.

We will continue to fight with all our might until complete victory, on all fronts and everywhere, until security and tranquility are restored to all Israelis.

Kiryat Malachi is located about 24 miles north of the Gaza Strip, where a war between Israel and Hamas terrorists has been going on for more than four months.

The conflict was sparked by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of about 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of estimates based on official Israeli statistics.
