Two Die After Falling Into Sea During Storm in Separate Incidents

MADRID (AP) – Two people have died after falling into the Atlantic Ocean off Spain’s northern coast, emergency services in the northern region of Asturias said Thursday.

The deaths came amid warnings of strong winds and widespread rain in many parts of Europe.

Emergency services said rescuers recovered the bodies of a man and a woman in two separate incidents about 10 kilometers apart along the coast west of the city of Gijón.

Emergency services said they received a report of a person falling into the sea, and the man’s body was pulled from the water, but he was not lifeless. Officials said the woman’s body was recovered after falling into the sea and being thrown onto rocks by waves.

Spain’s National Weather Service issued a warning for strong winds in several areas of the peninsula on Thursday. That included the coast of Asturias, where wave heights were predicted to reach 7 meters (23 feet).

Spain’s Atlantic coast region has not been affected by the drought that is affecting the northeastern and southern regions.

Easter week processions scheduled for Thursday were canceled in some cities due to rain.
