Two fatalities and eight injuries reported after a private plane crashes in a San Diego community

Small Plane Crash in San Diego

On May 22, 2025, tragedy struck in San Diego, California, when a small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood. Officials confirmed that two individuals lost their lives, and at least eight others sustained injuries. Almost 100 residents had to be evacuated for safety reasons.

Early reports indicated that the incident involved a Cessna 550 crashing into several homes just after 3:45 AM local time. The crash site is close to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, and the aftermath created what authorities described as a “gigantic debris field,” damaging approximately 15 homes and parked vehicles.

Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy addressed the media, stating that the plane made a “direct hit” on multiple structures and set numerous homes ablaze. He mentioned, “We have jet fuel all over the place,” confirming that the damages included at least 15 houses catching fire.

While the exact number of passengers on the aircraft is still unclear, there have been confirmed fatalities related to those onboard. Fortunately, it appears that no residents in the area were hospitalized following the accident.

Fire teams are actively working to extinguish the flames that engulfed the vehicles along the street. Eddy remarked on the destruction, noting that “every single car was burning down both sides of the street.”

One local resident, Christopher Moore, recounted the terrifying experience of hearing a loud noise before seeing flames and smoke. He and his family quickly evacuated their home, emphasizing the fear of the moment, saying, “It was definitely horrifying for sure.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, particularly since the weather conditions included heavy fog at the time. Eddy mentioned, “You could barely see in front of you.” The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has indicated that the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the inquiry into this tragic event.
