Kyle MacLean Makes Season Debut for Islanders
Kyle MacLean has been waiting for his moment to join the Islanders on the ice for three weeks. Finally, it came during a game against Anaheim, as the team required extra bodies due to injuries suffered by Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli.
“I’m just excited to get going,” MacLean mentioned in a pre-game interview. “I’ve been working hard and trying to stay patient. Of course, I don’t like to see injuries, but I’m definitely looking forward to this opportunity.”
Alongside MacLean, Mitchell Chaffee also made his season debut. Chaffee had been called up from AHL Hamilton just a day earlier due to the team’s limited healthy forwards, which numbered only 12.
“I thought they did a great job,” coach DeBoer remarked about MacLean and Chaffee, who played on the fourth line with Casey Cizikas. “I didn’t have to shelter them. They faced some tough matchups and brought us energy and physicality. They had some solid puck possession, particularly in the third period.”
It’s worth noting that this trio offers a more conventional fourth-line style than what the Islanders have typically utilized this season. However, their straightforward and defensive gameplay might contradict DeBoer’s usual preference for all lines to contribute offensively.
Chaffee has a bit more offensive history, having scored 12 goals with the Lightning back in the 2024-25 season and maintaining a point-per-game average in the AHL. Still, he had a challenging stint with Tampa last season, managing only 11 games.
That being said, a hardworking fourth line definitely has its benefits.
MacLean, when performing at his best, meshes well with Cizikas, sharing a similar mindset and strong puck retrievement skills. Chaffee appears to have comparable traits, too.
“He’s a good worker and a strong player with a really effective shot. He can be pretty lethal when he gets it off,” MacLean said about Chaffee. “What we observed in training camp is that he’s dependable, and I think he’ll work well with Casey. He’ll be solid on the forecheck and is tough on pucks, plus he has a sneaky shot.”
On a different note, DeBoer spoke about the uncertainty surrounding Mat Barzal’s recovery. When asked if something had changed regarding the team’s hopeful outlook on his return from injury, he explained, “Injuries are complex. A broken bone has a clear timeline, but with his situation, there’s more ambiguity. That’s just the reality we’re navigating.”
When a follow-up question was posed, a team spokesman indicated that Mathieu Darche would soon be available to provide more insight into Barzal’s condition.
