Two Lives Lost, Multiple Injuries in Plane Crash at LaGuardia Airport

Tragedy at LaGuardia Airport

Late Sunday night, a tragic incident occurred at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, resulting in the deaths of two Air Canada pilots and injuries to several others.

Kathryn Garcia, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, shared details on Monday, stating that a jet with 76 passengers had landed and collided with a fire truck on the runway. The unfortunate accident claimed the lives of both pilots, though their identities have not yet been revealed. Garcia indicated that they have been informed through Air Canada’s support team.

During a press conference, Garcia mentioned that out of the 41 individuals hospitalized, 32 have since been released. However, nine others remain under medical care, with some reported to be in critical condition.

Interestingly, two Port Authority employees on the fire truck sustained injuries, though they are not life-threatening.

The aircraft, which was arriving from Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, collided with the fire truck that was attending to a separate incident involving a United Airlines flight that had an odor problem during takeoff.

Images from the scene depict the wreckage of the jetliner on the runway, amidst rescue vehicles. The aircraft’s nose was pointed upward, and the cockpit appeared to be severely damaged, revealing wires and flight controls among the wreckage.

LaGuardia Airport is anticipated to remain closed until at least 2 p.m. today. Garcia confirmed that the National Transportation Safety Board is set to conduct an investigation, and updates will be provided as they become available.

This story is still unfolding.
