A Los Angeles Wine Spot and Orange County Tavern Named Best Bars in America

A unique wine venue in Los Angeles, which notably lacks a traditional bar, alongside a lively sports tavern in Orange County, have been recognized as some of America’s top bars.

Stir Crazy in Los Angeles and Kelly’s Corner Tavern in Placentia have made it onto Esquire’s 2026 list, marking a proud moment for California with two places featured in this annual celebration of notable drinking spots.

Stir Crazy, located on Melrose Avenue, is recognized despite Esquire noting there’s no actual bar top for customers to sit at. The magazine argues, however, that a great bar isn’t just about the layout—it’s about the connections and good vibes shared among patrons.

Esquire praised the establishment for its generous offerings, highlighting delicious dishes like anchovies with herbs and hazelnuts, leek toast topped with chevre, celery salad, and poached chicken with turnips and chanterelles.

Meanwhile, the second spot, Kelly’s Corner Tavern, described by Esquire as a beloved local haunt, thrives on trivia nights, displays of sports memorabilia, and a loyal clientele.

This Orange County bar features around 30 flat-screen TVs, craft beer taps hanging from the ceiling, and various tributes to local sports such as the 2002 World Series champion Angels and Cal State Fullerton baseball team.

The food at Kelly’s also gained accolades, noted for being “better-than-average sports bar cuisine.” Diners can look forward to giant burgers, hearty sandwiches, and carne asada nachos served with homemade salsa that’s described as particularly fiery.

Yet, there seems to be a bittersweet note in this recognition. Kelly’s Corner Tavern has recently adjusted its hours, closing at 11 p.m. most nights, and the buzz during trivia events has dwindled, suggesting that fewer patrons are coming through the doors compared to before.

Nonetheless, the tavern remains a genuinely welcoming neighborhood spot. While it might not attract the attention of trendy influencers, it retains the charm of a place where real connections take precedence.

Esquire’s 2026 rankings also include other bars such as Halftime Rec in St. Paul, Stars in New York City, and Ball & Chain in Miami, among others across the country.
