Massive Vehicle Hijacking in Boston
Two men have been released on bail after a significant vehicle hijacking incident in Boston, where a police car was set ablaze early Sunday morning.
Boston police reported that over 100 individuals participated in the hijacking, which was coupled with a street race shortly after 2 a.m. When officers arrived, they discovered a crowd attacking the police vehicle with cones, fireworks, and sticks.
In addition, cars were obstructing the intersection, complicating traffic flow. The police cruiser was ultimately destroyed by the fire and had to be towed away, according to reports.
Simran Nalhatra, a bystander, described the situation as chaotic, saying, “It was like a riot.” He recounted seeing a police car on fire after witnessing an arrest, noting the fear and commotion that lasted for about an hour or so.
The police later reported that one individual in the crowd even leaped onto the hood of the cruiser, which heightened the danger for the officers present.
Julian Bowers, 18, from Cumberland, Rhode Island, and William Cantwell, 19, from Warwick, Rhode Island, were arrested in connection with this incident. They face charges including assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and significant property damage exceeding $1,200.
Bowers allegedly threw items at officers and their vehicles, while Cantwell is accused of using a pole to smash a police cruiser. Both men pleaded not guilty, with the judge granting bail set at $500 for Bowers and $1,000 for Cantwell. Interestingly, the duo fist-bumped upon learning their bail amounts, even though prosecutors had sought much higher cash bail initially.
Boston Police Chief Michael Cox stated that, fortunately, no officers were hurt; however, he stressed that such behavior would not be tolerated in the city.
Interestingly, just an hour before the Boston takeover, a similar incident occurred in Randolph, Massachusetts, where a police cruiser was also targeted by a similarly large crowd.
