Officers in Pennsylvania Critically Injured After Retail Theft Response
Two officers from Pennsylvania state police are in critical condition following a shooting that occurred while they were responding to a theft report at a retail location in Franklin County, officials have stated.
The incident took place at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Guilford Township, which the officers arrived at around 6:10 p.m.
After the initial call, the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, leading police onto Interstate 81 where a chase ensued.
Authorities used spike strips to halt the vehicle off Exit 3.
As reported by Pennsylvania State Police, two female suspects exited the car and were taken into custody under officer instruction. However, a male suspect then began firing upon the officers, injuring two of them. Officers returned fire, resulting in the male suspect being fatally shot.
Both injured officers were subsequently transported to WelSpan York Hospital for medical attention.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his concerns, stating he and his wife, Lori, are praying for the injured officers and encouraging others to do the same. He remarked on social media, “Tonight, Lori and I are praying for the souls of the two state troopers who were shot and killed in the line of duty in Chambersburg.”
He emphasized the bravery of Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers, reminding the community of their daily sacrifices to maintain safety. “Please join me in praying for the injured officers, their loved ones, and all members of the Pennsylvania State Police,” he urged.
State police confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public, yet noted the situation remains active.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of violence against Pennsylvania law enforcement. Last month, three police officers in York County were ambushed and killed while responding to a domestic incident. Similarly, a York County employee was shot at UPMC Memorial Hospital just months earlier.
The Pennsylvania State Police Officers Association expressed gratitude for the bravery of the responding officers and called for prayers for their recovery and their families.
