Two people killed in Texas after 350,000 pound load detaches from trailer, crushes vehicle

Authorities in Texas are investigating an incident Saturday that left two people dead and one seriously injured after a large piece of equipment broke loose from a tractor-trailer and fell onto a vehicle, trapping it inside.

Just before 11:30 a.m. Saturday, first responders responded to a report of a crash on State Route 36 just west of Route 317, according to Temple Fire and Rescue.

When crews arrived, they said they found an oversized package detached from the trailer and a vehicle wedged underneath.

Officials estimated that the equipment carried by the convoy weighed about 350,000 pounds. Officials have not revealed what the large piece of debris is.

Authorities said three people were trapped inside the vehicle.

Two passengers suffered fatal injuries, and a third victim was rescued and rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Officials said it took just over four hours to safely remove the driver from the vehicle.

Temple Fire and Rescue added that 10 units and 25 personnel were called to the crash to help.

Officials said the cause of the crash is still under investigation

The identity of the victim has not been released.
