Two people saved after their boat caught fire near Hallandale Beach, Florida

On Monday, two boaters were rescued after their vessel caught fire off the coast of Florida. Judson Grosvenor, who was among the first on the scene, mentioned he noticed smoke rising from Hallandale Beach and immediately headed to help. “When we arrived, the boat was already fully engulfed in flames,” he recalled, describing the 35-foot craft.

Grosvenor quickly contacted the U.S. Coast Guard while making his way to the burning vessel. He recounted how, upon arrival, he spotted someone in the water and raced to assist. “We picked him up,” he said, adding that the individual informed him that another man was floating nearby in a life jacket.

Grosvenor noted that when he and the rescuer reached the second individual, they were able to guide the Coast Guard to their location. “For someone whose boat had just caught fire, he seemed very calm,” Grosvenor shared with an outlet. It’s interesting how people react in such intense situations; some manage to maintain their composure amid chaos.

First responders soon arrived, and Grosvenor took the initiative to jump into the water to further assist. It’s somewhat unsettling, really—imagine having to deal with the aftermath of a fire on a boat. Thankfully, the two occupants were brought safely to shore without sustaining injuries.

The full circumstances of how the fire started remain unclear, and an investigation has been launched. Fire units from several agencies, including Hollywood Fire and Rescue and Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire and Rescue, also played a role in addressing the situation.

It’s a reminder of how important it is for boaters to look out for each other. “If we didn’t, who knows what would have happened?” Grosvenor pondered, highlighting the sense of community among sailors.
