Arrests Made Following High-End Handbag Heist Attempt in California
Authorities in California reported on Tuesday that two individuals have been arrested after a suspect was recorded attempting to steal luxury handbags valued at around $100,000.
Video footage, shared by the Irvine Police Department (IPD), shows heavily armed officers intervening during what appeared to be a bold robbery. In the video, two suspects, clad in black hoodies and masks, are seen trying to escape with a bag filled with designer goods.
The incident was first reported early Tuesday morning, with a security guard at the store notifying the police. “Irvine Police Department responded to a robbery at a luxury handbag store in the Jamboree and Dupont area,” the department stated. “The building’s security guard alerted us that two individuals were seen entering the premises.”
IPD identified the suspects as 40-year-old Richard Bernard Spencer from Los Angeles and 30-year-old Marcellus Ronnell Shelby from Hollywood.
Surveillance footage revealed that the suspects climbed a high wall before entering the expensive store, which features brands like Celine and Givenchy. Once inside, they were later spotted attempting to exit through an emergency exit with a significant amount of luggage. However, they quickly fled up the stairs.
A substantial police presence was dispatched, including officers equipped with what seemed to be assault rifles, along with a K9 unit and support from the Costa Mesa Police Department, as the video shows the officers locating the two hidden near an office area.
In body camera footage captured during the arrests, the suspects can be seen resisting as they are escorted to a police vehicle. Thankfully, officers managed to recover a purse worth about $100,000 and return it to the owner.
The two suspects now face charges of robbery, grand larceny, conspiracy, criminal damage to property, and resisting arrest, according to police. They have been booked into the Orange County Jail.
