More than two-thirds of Americans say President-elect Donald Trump's plans to impose tariffs will make goods more expensive, according to a new survey.
harris poll, Released on Wednesday A Guardian poll found that 69 percent of Americans believe the next commander-in-chief's proposed tariffs would “significantly” or “somewhat” increase the price of domestic goods.
More than half of respondents across political affiliations agreed, with 79% of Democrats, 68% of independents, and 59% of Republicans saying they think tariffs would lead to higher prices.
The poll results were released just two days after President Trump said he would impose new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China on his first day in office next year. The president-elect said in a letter Monday that he would impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on China.
He cited the need for countries to do more to crack down on fentanyl entering the United States and strengthen border security.
According to the survey, a majority of respondents (76%) said businesses would raise the prices of goods for consumers if the president-elect's tariffs were implemented.
Some are already planning adjustments. Approximately 44% of respondents said they plan to purchase items before Trump's inauguration on January 20th. Nearly two-thirds, 62%, said they thought they would have to change their bargain buys for next year if tariffs went into effect. The data shows.
Just over half of Republican voters, 51%, said tariffs would have a positive impact on the country's economic outlook. According to the poll, about 27% of independents said the same, along with 20% of Democrats.
Harris' survey was conducted between November 14th and 16th among 2,112 American adults. The margin of error was 2.5 percentage points.
