Last week, authorities arrested two illegal immigrants in connection with a violent home invasion in North Carolina that resulted in one victim being hospitalized. The incident reportedly took place late Wednesday night in a suburban neighborhood.
According to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, on February 11, 2026, at 3:16 a.m., deputies responded to an assault call in the 200 block of Lewis Street, located in the Cherry Oaks area of Greenville. Upon arrival, they determined that it was actually a home invasion.
Both suspects were found to be in the United States unlawfully.
The individuals arrested were identified as Jonathan David Garcia-Lario, a 20-year-old homeless man, and Zaid Mayen, a 21-year-old from Chapel Hill. Police apprehended them two days after the crime, recovering key evidence from an apartment in Chapel Hill, which is about two hours away from where the incident occurred.
The suspects are facing severe charges that include rape or similarly forcible crimes, kidnapping, robbery, and using a deadly weapon with intent to kill. They each have been charged with four felonies: first-degree robbery, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree forcible sexual assault, and assault with a deadly weapon resulting in serious bodily injury.
While officials have not confirmed the specific nature or severity of the injuries sustained by the victim, it was noted that the victim was transported to a local hospital.
The Department of Homeland Security has been alerted, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement is expected to be involved. Each suspect is currently in ICE custody, suggesting that immigration officials might eventually take them into custody.
The arrests were made with the help of the U.S. Marshals Service and involved the Chapel Hill Police Department as well. Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Division were called to investigate the serious nature of this incident.
Initially, Garcia-Lario was booked into Franklin County Jail but was later moved to Pitt County Jail, where he remains without bail. Mayen was booked initially into Orange County Jail, also held without bail.
