FIFA Lifts Suspension of US Soccer Star, Belgium Plans to Appeal

FIFA has decided to lift the suspension on US soccer player Folarin Balogun, allowing him to participate in the critical match against Belgium tonight. However, the Belgian team is likely to appeal this decision, adding some last-minute tension before the game kicks off.

In other news, multiple reports indicate that FIFA has suspended at least two prominent members of the U.S. Soccer Federation just ahead of the upcoming World Cup match against Belgium. According to ESPN, these banned individuals include team manager Sam Zapatka and Frank Pannell, the vice president of security for U.S. Soccer. Unfortunately, the U.S. team faced a tough loss to Belgium, ending their run in the 2026 World Cup with a score of 4-1.

The reason behind these suspensions hasn’t been made public yet. Some sources suggest it may be related to incidents that occurred during Team USA’s recent victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, including possible violations of FIFA’s match protocols, specifically regarding access to restricted areas. No physical confrontations are known to have taken place.

After joining the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2015, Zapatka was appointed as the director of team management in 2020. While U.S. Soccer has not disclosed the specifics of the suspension, they emphasized that it is separate from the situation surrounding Balogun’s recent red card.

In a twist of events, Belgium’s appeal against the lifting of Balogun’s suspension has been officially denied by FIFA. So, he remains eligible to play. On a side note, President Trump mentioned in a press conference that he had watched the contentious play and reached out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the red card issue. “I asked for a review because I didn’t believe it was a foul,” Trump stated, explaining that it looked like just an athletic collision to him.

Looking ahead, Belgium’s victory over the U.S. has secured them a place in the quarterfinals, where they will challenge Spain at the Los Angeles Stadium this Friday.
