Independence Day Celebrations at the World Cup
The pre-match festivities for the Round of 16 World Cup match between France and Paraguay have made quite an impression on history, particularly for an Independence Day celebration that noticeably lacked the American team. It might sound odd to honor a distinctly American event when the U.S. isn’t involved, but stay with me here.
This past Saturday, Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia was alive with additional performers, a stunning fireworks display, and even a transformation of the field, designed to evoke the spirit of the Star-Spangled Banner. The Philadelphia Boys Choir and Chorus delivered a heartfelt rendition of “America the Beautiful,” marking a significant moment as the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary.
World Cup soccer enthusiasts are beginning to recognize America’s unique allure, and maybe it’s time for Americans to appreciate it too.
As the choir sang, two young performers—a white man and a Black woman—shared what can best be described as spoken word poetry, highlighting the beauty of America’s founding through the lens of Philadelphia, often dubbed the City of Brotherly Love.
“Two hundred fifty years ago, in this city, an idea found its voice,” the young man proclaimed.
“It’s not perfect. It’s unfinished. But it’s daring enough to believe in others,” the young woman followed, her words weaving into the choir’s soft hum.
The choir’s performance reflected on how the core American principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness have led to incredible freedoms—and coincidentally, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which aims to “unite the world.”
Other highlights included Miss Pennsylvania, Stephanie Skinner, appearing in a Statue of Liberty costume and a stunning naval flyover. It was one of those moments that just gave you chills.

As the Philadelphia Boys Choir sang beautifully during the Independence Day ceremony before the match, the atmosphere was thick with emotion, not just for the day but what it symbolizes for the nation.
Happy birthday, America!
