NBA Cup Prize Money Disparities

In Toronto, the prize money for the NBA Cup varies considerably across players.

For Karl-Anthony Towns, it’s a mere drop in the bucket compared to his $53 million salary. In contrast, Tyler Kolek views it as a significant bonus atop his $2.2 million contract.

And, it’s quite timely, especially with the holidays approaching.

“It’s definitely a substantial amount. Last Christmas, I bought my mom a car with my winnings,” Kolek remarked Tuesday night, just before the Knicks secured a 117-101 victory over the Raptors in the NBA Cup quarterfinals. “We were at this stage last year but didn’t advance, so here’s hoping we make it this time. It will feel a bit like a Christmas gift.”

Another car for mom, maybe?

“Nah, my dad has his eyes on the next one,” Kolek replied, laughing.

Kolek has played a minor role in the Knicks’ success but will have an increased opportunity to compete for the NBA Cup, which offers each player $514,790. Following injuries to teammates Landry Shamet (shoulder sprain) and Miles McBride (ankle sprain), his responsibilities have grown.

McBride, hurt during a recent game against the Magic, is undergoing tests to figure out the severity of his high ankle sprain, as officials indicated on Tuesday.

Since McBride didn’t travel to Toronto after leaving the practice facility in a walking boot, Kolek has teamed up with another backup guard, Jordan Clarkson. He contributed two points in eight minutes off the bench.

“Every game is a big opportunity,” Kolek noted. “We’re pushing to win, especially since this is a cup match. So, regardless, I’m eager for the game.”

Last year’s quarterfinal prize was $51,497, which helped Kolek gift his mother a new car. Now, they stand to earn $102,994 for advancing to the semi-finals, or $205,998 each if they lose in the finals.

Sounds like a pretty good car for dad, right?

Mitchell Robinson had his own reasons for being in Las Vegas. He’s looking forward to a Zac Brown Band concert at the Sphere, a venue nearby owned by James Dolan.

The band is scheduled to perform on December 12th and 13th, with Robinson hoping the Knicks will still be in the running by then.

Even though the show is sold out, he likely has some connections.

“We also have some country concerts lined up, so fans can check those out,” Robinson added.
