Tyler Shaw’s First NFL Start
Tyler Shaw’s wife displayed a straightforward reaction when she found out he would be starting as the Saints’ rookie quarterback this week.
During a press conference on Wednesday, the second-round draft pick shared his wife’s, Jordan’s, competitive spirit in response to the news. It was evident that she was excited yet focused. “It felt good because she’s been a significant part of this journey, from college to the draft process. But at the same time, she’s a competitor. She’s been playing soccer, so she was like, ‘Okay, let’s go out there and win.’ She’s not overly thrilled, and neither am I. There’s really nothing to celebrate,” he explained.
Shaw, 26, who was picked 40th overall in this year’s NFL Draft, played in last week’s game against Tampa Bay, stepping in for starter Spencer Rattler during the second half of what ended as a 23-3 defeat.
In that game, he completed 17 passes out of 30 attempts for 128 yards, though he did throw one interception.
On Tuesday, the Saints announced they would bench Rattler, the fifth-round pick from 2024, after enduring three consecutive losses that dropped the team to a 1-7 record.
“Tyler stepped in and contributed,” said Kellen Moore, the team’s first-year head coach, following Sunday’s game. “He made some plays, though the interception was disappointing. He gave us a chance to convert, and we’re evaluating our options going forward. But we need the whole offense to perform better, and we’re hoping to ignite a spark somehow.”
Shaw spent his final year of college at Louisville after transfersfrom Oregon Tech and Texas Tech. He was the first quarterback selected in the second round of the draft, which captivated many fans, especially dog lovers. Shortly after the memorable call from the Saints, Shaw celebrated the moment with his family, including Jordan and their puppy, Murphy, who excitedly jumped around them.
Shaw and Jordan marked their first wedding anniversary in April, and now he’s getting ready to face the Rams this Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
