Tyra Mae Steele’s Rise in WWE NXT
Tyra Mae Steele has quickly found her footing in the WWE NXT scene after winning the female category of the “WWE Legends and Future Greats” competition.
Interestingly, wrestling wasn’t always her first choice. While many may recognize her from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she claimed gold in the women’s 68-kilogram freestyle category, her journey has been quite diverse. Steele made history as the first African American woman to win Olympic gold in wrestling, which certainly didn’t hurt her popularity.
In a recent conversation, she shared that, despite her accomplishments, her passion for wrestling has begun to wane. “I’m a natural athlete. I have this gift to really excel in this sport. But winning the Olympics? It felt a bit hollow since there was no one in the stands,” she explained. “I continued to wrestle for a couple of years, but it started feeling more like a chore.” She reminisced about how competing abroad felt easier than she wanted it to be. “I really thrive on a good, tough match with someone who challenges me,” she added.
Steele admitted that she found Olympic training to be rather mundane, which led her to explore opportunities in WWE when they approached her. “When WWE wanted me on board, I thought, ‘This might just be the fresh start I need.’ It felt like a calling,” she remarked, expressing her excitement about rediscovering her joy in the sport.
What attracted her to WWE was the chance to showcase not just her wrestling skills but also her personality. “I want to bring something new and engaging to the table,” she mentioned. Steele won the “WWE LFG” competition and is now eager to develop her skills further at NXT.
As she prepares to step into a vibrant division of female wrestlers, who are gearing up for big moves in either “Raw” or “SmackDown,” it’s clear that Steele is excited about this new chapter. “I’m all about the fight and starting anew,” she concluded, hinting at the possibilities ahead.
