Tyson Bagent’s recent two-year extension worth $10 million might not grab headlines amidst the Bears’ extensive salary cap figures, but his significance goes beyond financials.
The 25-year-old quarterback, who could potentially reach up to $16 million in incentives, expressed deep emotion about a deal that kicks in after the 2025 season, positioning him as one of the NFL’s highest-paid backups.
“A lot of people might not realize this, but my dad is right here,” Bagent said, holding back tears during a press conference. “He didn’t have running water until he was in high school. There are so many ways I can help my family with this opportunity. It’s really something when you think about how many people back home could use financial support.”
Undrafted from Division II Shepherd University, where he snagged the 2021 Harlon Hill Trophy, Bagent has become the Bears’ second-string quarterback since 2023, making a significant mark on the Chicago organization.
“No one works harder on this team than Tyson Bagent,” remarked GM Ryan Poles during a preseason broadcast against the Bills.
“Tyson embodies what we want to build with the Chicago Bears,” Coach Ben Johnson added. “We’re focused on developing a team based on belief and hard work, and Tyson is a prime example of that.”

In a recent game against the Bills, Bagent completed 12 of 22 passes for 196 yards and threw a touchdown. He continues to prepare for his role behind starter Caleb Williams.
He doesn’t take his position lightly, being one of the few backup quarterbacks, alongside Texans’ Davis Mills, to receive a contract extension before their rookie deals are up.
“It really means everything to me,” Bagent shared. “It’s such a huge compliment. It allows me to come in every day with confidence and motivation to work even harder.”
