Tyson Fury’s Troubled Relationship with His Father
Boxer Tyson Fury’s relationship with his father, John Fury, seems strained, as highlighted by John’s recent comments. He indicated that their bond has deteriorated over time, a sharp contrast to when John was a mentor to Tyson and his siblings.
During an interview on Playbook Boxing, John expressed that the split began with Tyson’s choice to fight Oleksandr Usyk twice. He also pointed out Tyson’s struggles after John advised him to pull out of a fight against Deontay Wilder.
“I really begged and pleaded with him before the first match,” John lamented. He described how Tyson, despite having a full training camp, got injured shortly before the fight, making it tough for him to recover adequately. “You can’t just take a three-week break and jump back into a rigorous schedule. It was a lot.”
Tyson faced consecutive defeats against Usyk, losing the first by a split decision and the rematch in a unanimous decision. In January 2025, following these losses, Tyson announced his retirement from boxing.
“I just want to quickly address my retirement,” Fury shared at that time. “It was great—every minute of it. And, well, that’s that. Dick Turpin was wearing a mask. God bless you all, see you soon.”
However, in January, Tyson mentioned plans to return to the ring in 2026, though his father doubts this is the best move for him. “I think he’s past his prime,” John stated candidly. “I’m someone who speaks honestly. I love my son, but too many people are telling him things that are false, acting like he’s invincible. He isn’t, and he hasn’t been for quite some time.”
Reflecting on a recent encounter with Usyk, John expressed frustration, saying, “After that meeting, I felt like I could strangle Sugar. He’s nothing like Emmanuel Steward; he doesn’t even resemble him. He’s just a gym cleaner, really.”
Looking ahead, Tyson is set to face Arslanbek Makhmudov in April.
