U-Haul truck blast claims life of 1 in Idaho shopping center parking lot

Authorities reported that one person was killed in a U-Haul truck explosion early Saturday morning.

The incident took place around 7:15 a.m. in the parking lot of an Old Navy store located in Lewiston, Idaho, which is just across the border from Washington state.

Initial investigations indicate that the explosion was likely accidental. The truck appeared to be transporting various supplies, such as gasoline and propane tanks, as noted by a joint statement from the Lewiston Police Department and the Lewiston Fire Department.

“Currently, there are no signs suggesting any criminal activity,” said Lewiston Fire Marshal Julian Sorrell in a statement.

The explosion resulted in damage to nearby businesses, specifically Old Navy and the Courtyard Marriott, though no fire ensued afterward.

Officials mentioned that while there is no immediate threat to public safety, residents and visitors should steer clear of the area to allow emergency personnel and investigators to operate safely.

The investigation is ongoing.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including the Lewiston Fire Department, Lewiston Police Department, Idaho State Police, the Lewiston Street Division, and Nez Perce County authorities.
