U.N. Leader Antonio Guterres Continuously Commends Trump's Efforts for Peace at General Assembly

Guterres Addresses the General Assembly

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, kicked off his annual high-level discussions at the General Assembly on Tuesday. He began with an appreciative note towards President Trump for his efforts in global conflict resolution.

While Guterres criticized budget cuts, he seemed cautious about aligning with some Trump administration views, particularly regarding the so-called “climate crisis.” Despite acknowledging controversies surrounding this term, he largely maintained a supportive stance toward the president, who later omitted acknowledging the critical viewpoints of his organization.

Following their speeches, Guterres met with Trump, expressing gratitude for the U.S. efforts to pursue ceasefires worldwide. Trump, in turn, voiced his full backing of the UN’s potential.

The General Assembly serves as an annual platform for world leaders, allowing each to deliver a “voluntary” 15-minute address on their chosen topics. Generally, Guterres leads this session, followed by various prominent figures, including the president of Brazil and the U.S. president, as the host.

In his remarks, Guterres emphasized the UN’s role as a “moral compass” for the world. He described it as a powerful entity for peacekeeping and human rights, acting as a crucial support system for people in crises.

He warned of the detrimental effects of budget reductions: “As our ability to perform our tasks is diminished, we face an era marked by confusion and suffering,” he stated. “The foundations you established are under threat. The principles of peace and progress are burdened by inequality and indifference.”

Guterres raised several key points in his speech, including a push for increased funding for the UN and an acknowledgment of the “climate crisis” as a pressing issue. He expressed gratitude for U.S. interventions in various conflicts.

“In Ukraine, relentless violence continues to harm civilians and threaten global stability. I commend recent U.S. diplomatic efforts,” he remarked. He called for adherence to UN charters and resolutions to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire and sustainable peace.

Reflecting on the previous year, Guterres noted ongoing violence worldwide but also pointed out some hopeful developments, such as a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand and a U.S.-brokered agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Trump had persistently criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which escalated in 2022 during Biden’s term.

In July, border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand led to conflicts displacing thousands. The Trump administration, collaborating with Malaysia, managed to broker a ceasefire at that time.

“I was thrilled to have halted the Cambodian war with a fantastic local rival,” Trump shared, adding how he worked on it one day and stopped it the next.

The Cambodian government has since nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

In August, leaders from Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a peace deal at the White House, following a brutal assault by Azerbaijan on territories historically inhabited by Armenians. Long-standing ties between Armenia and Russia further complicated the situation. The conflict remained unresolved until the White House mediated an agreement that brought some respite.

Guterres praised these diplomatic moves but refrained from criticizing other aspects of Trump’s policy, which he had previously condemned, like the military strike against Iran and support for Israel.

He mostly avoided calls for increased American spending, instead suggesting that other nations increase their contributions to the UN.

“To foster dignity, we must advocate for financial justice and solidarity,” Guterres urged. He highlighted the need for reform in international financial architecture to facilitate development more equitably.

In his later meeting with Trump, Guterres reiterated the essential role the U.S. plays in the UN. “For decades, we have relied on the U.S. as our primary advocate,” he noted. “There are many areas for collaboration, with peace being the most vital.”

Trump reciprocated Guterres’ sentiments while humorously mentioning technical difficulties during their meeting, noting that both the escalator and teleprompter malfunctioned.

“Our country fully supports the UN,” Trump stated, emphasizing the great potential of the organization.
