US defense leaders have begun conceptualizing plans to develop a “Golden Dome” defense system that can protect the country from long-range missile strikes.

President Donald Trump ordered the Department of Defense to begin planning in January, taking inspiration from Israel's iron dome missile defense system.

President Trump's Golden Dome must be much more complicated than Israeli iron dome due to much larger lands in the United States, and the scale of the project is exponentially larger.

“The American Golden Dome is an innovative concept to promote peace goals through strength and strength to stop the enemy from attacks in their homelands and President Trump's vision. This next-generation defense shield identified incoming projectiles, calculated interceptor missiles, destroyed them, filled their homelands, projected American strength, and overseen the US Department of Defense.

“This is a project-scale mission in Manhattan and an urgent and important mission for America's safety.”

The potential budget for the project is unknown as plans are still being created, but the grand project is likely to cost billions of dollars to build and maintain.

“This will be a layer of architecture that will work together at all group-level elevations… to protect the United States… we will need all the services and agencies to do this kind of work,” said Stephen Morani, acting Secretary of Defense for maintenance.

The project was previously requested by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, but the necessary technology was not available at the time.

Meanwhile, retired rear Rep. Mark Montgomery said CNN He believes the defense system will be at least seven to ten years from now, with significant restrictions and perhaps only to defend important federal buildings and major cities.

Montgomery said the project likely includes a satellite system to communicate and sense incoming missiles.

“You have to take responsibility here,” he continued. “You can't protect everything with these ground-based missiles. They defend the circle around them, but that's not big.”

Despite skepticism, Raytheon CEO Phil Jasper said he believes he could set up some of the defensive measures in 2026.

“In our view, it must be a kind of layered system, because filming a UAV, for example, is very different from filming a high-sonic vehicle or a high-sonic weapon,” Jasper said. “What the administration laid out is a building block approach where we can start protecting certain areas and build them as we continue to produce these systems. And they can continue to fall off the production line.”

Additionally, Edward Zoiss, president of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris Technologies, notes that new intercontinental ballistic missiles present additional challenges as unpredictable flight paths become more difficult to intercept.

“When I go back to high school physics classes, if you understand the angle and trajectory of a bullet, you know exactly where you'll land to follow the parabola,” Zois said.

“ICBMS has been following a parabolic trajectory for decades, but there is no new class of highly maneuverable cruise and polar weapons now,” he continued. “Their endpoints are uncertain, and the US defense system needs to change to become more robust to track that weapon throughout its trajectory.”

“Our challenge is truly long-range weapons. All you know are weapons that travel long distances piloting around current land and sea-based radar systems. So, if the weapons operate those systems, the current architecture cannot provide fire control instructions. So you need to move into space.

Funding for the project is expected to be presented to Congress in President Trump's 2026 fiscal year budget request.
