Trump Ends Trade Talks with Canada Over Digital Tax
President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will cease trade negotiations with Canada regarding its digital tax. This decision highlights a significant breakdown in discussions and rising tensions concerning economic policies between the two nations. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the move as a “direct and blatant attack on our country.”
“Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,” Trump stated. “We will inform Canada of the Tariff they will incur to conduct business with the United States within the next seven days.”
A Digital Services Tax (DST) targets large technology corporations, including Google, Amazon, and Facebook, taxing the revenue these companies earn from online services like advertising and e-commerce within the respective country. Such taxes tend to primarily impact big U.S.-based tech firms.
Officials in the U.S. regard this tax as unfairly discriminatory against American businesses, and during Trump’s administration, similar policies have typically prompted a strong response.
“We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products…” Trump remarked in another post.
