U.S. flag hoisted again in Kuwait City as embassy reopens

The U.S. Department of State recently announced that the American flag has been raised over Kuwait City as operations at the U.S. Embassy resume.

This follows a suspension of operations back in early March, prompted by escalating conflict in Iran. After a pause of over three months, the embassy reported on Wednesday that it has resumed some operations, although with a few services still limited.

“The American flag: a symbol of liberty, unity, and freedom now flies proudly once again over Kuwait City,” stated Secretary Marco Rubio in a post on X.

During the flag-raising ceremony, the secretary presented the flag to a service member, while military personnel stood at attention as it was hoisted.

Rubio reiterated that Kuwait is a vital ally for regional security and stability, expressing anticipation for further strengthening partnerships in various areas.

Kuwait, which accommodates several U.S. troops, faced significant threats from Iranian air assets amid the conflict. The Kuwait Army reported that nearly 900 drones, close to 400 ballistic missiles, and 15 cruise missiles had entered its airspace since the onset of hostilities with Iran.

On a related note, Rubio arrived in Kuwait on Wednesday as part of a three-day Middle East trip, which included a meeting with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi.

His upcoming itinerary includes a stop in Bahrain, where he plans to engage with members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to talk about shared priorities in the region, as explained by State Department spokesperson Thomas Pigott.

Pigott also mentioned that Rubio would discuss the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the U.S. and Iran, transit safety through the Strait of Hormuz, along with other pertinent policy issues.
